Safety on the Job
Conveyor Thoroughfare
Walking under conveyors in use can be fatal. A build-up of product occurs just under the belt (often called 'Widow Makers') as well as loose rocks. These chunks can kill.Always use the sheltered walkway when crossing under any conveyor.
Stanley Knives
Find out the site policy on using a blade knife. Often there banned, or must use mesh cutting gloves with an
SOP first.'Cutting Tip' Cut away from the body and use WD40 as lubricant on the blade.
Coiling Extension Leads
When the job's done and you are coiling up the leads, turn the power off first. Sounds common sense but it's amazing how often leads are rolled up whilst still live, a very dangerous act. (Also switch off before plugging in)
Rust hides Danger
Sometimes the obvious needs to be "SHOUTED" If you are around unfamiliar places on the mine site, don't assume strong metal under the rust and dirt. Handrails, Grid-mesh floors and Steps particularly, can be 'just not there'. Metal floor plates waiting to collapse and structual beams can also be very questionable. If can't see the actual metal take extreme care!
Don't use compressed air to dust yourself
OK, so you got dirt and dust on your cloths. DON'T USE COMPRESSED AIR.
On rare occasions, some of the compressed air can enter the blood stream through a break in the skin or through a body opening. An air bubble in the blood stream is known medically as an embolism, a dangerous medical condition in which a blood vessel is blocked, in this case, by an air bubble. An embolism of an artery can cause coma, paralysis or death. While air embolisms are usually associated with incorrect diving procedures, they are possible with compressed air due to high pressures. The consequences of even a small quantity of air or other gas in the blood can quickly be fatal.
Some employers supply a low pressure garden leaf blower for this, if not ask why not?
